With the increasing number of cases, COVID-19 has become a concern for people around the world. Experts of Stanford University School of Medicine and other institutions have investigated immunological deviations and lapses that show the alteration between severe and mild cases of the coronavirus infection.
The difference between cases may be associated with how the immune system reacts to SARS CoV-2. The immune system quickly senses the availability of the virus and other pathogens responsible for the spread. As soon as the immune system senses foreign bodies, it launches an immediate attack on them – the innate immune system. Meanwhile, the system also organizes precisely cells that belong to different branches of the pathogen-defense forces of the body – the adaptive immune system.
The findings can help to reveal the fact that how the immune system gets twisted when it gets in contact with coronavirus infection leading to severe disease and also point to possible therapeutic targets.
Molecule Suspects through the Research:
To conclude the theory, a research study was carried out where 76 people with coronavirus disease and 69 healthy people were taken. In 19 severely ill coronavirus patients, an enhanced level of molecules that boost inflammation in the blood was diagnosed. Three molecules showed to be associated with lung inflammation in other health problems but they did not appear previously in COVID-19 infections.
These three molecules and their receptors could represent therapeutic targets in COVID-19 infections. Also, the elevated level of bacterial debris like cell-wall materials and bacterial DNA was found in the blood of patients with severe cases. The more debris the blood has, the sicker the patient will be. In these cases, certain cells of the innate immune system become less effective in responding to the disease. Instead of being activated by the virus, these cells become functionally sluggish.
Pro-inflammatory substances that circulate in the blood of a patient can determine the severity of the case. A high level of inflammation-promoting molecules differentiates COVID-19 patients from those with mild symptoms.
In severe COVID-19 cases, bacterial products have their presence in the lungs, gut, and throat that can make their way to the bloodstream causing inflammation conveyed to all points through the circulatory system.
