Three molecules showed to be associated with lung inflammation in other health problems but they did not appear previously in COVID-19 infections.
These three molecules and their receptors could represent therapeutic targets in COVID-19 infections. Also, the elevated level of bacterial debris like cell-wall materials and bacterial DNA was found in the blood of patients with severe cases. The more debris the blood has, the sicker the patient will be. In these cases, certain cells of the innate immune system become less effective in responding to the disease. Instead of being activated by the virus, these cells become functionally sluggish.
Pro-inflammatory substances that circulate in the blood of a patient can determine the severity of the case. A high level of inflammation-promoting molecules differentiates COVID-19 patients from those with mild symptoms.
In severe COVID-19 cases, bacterial products have their presence in the lungs, gut, and throat that can make their way to the bloodstream causing inflammation conveyed to all points through the circulatory system.
